Botox & Fillers Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved and an extremely popular cosmetic injection used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It uses a serum derived from the botulinum toxin to paralyze the muscles under your skin temporarily.

What is a dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are another form of injectable cosmetic treatment. Drs. Dumrong and Edward Tangchitnob use Juvederm® products to add volume to the lips and cheeks as well as fill in some facial wrinkles. Juvederm is the brand name for several different filler options that use hyaluronic acid to restore plumpness and volume in your skin.

How do Botox and fillers work?

Wrinkles and signs of aging form in two distinct ways. As you get older, your body produces less collagen and elastin, which are the fibers that keep your skin supple and plump. Wrinkles develop either when your skin is no longer able to bounce back to smoothness after you smile or frown or when you lose volume in your skin and it becomes lax.

Botox and dermal fillers reduce the appearance of signs of aging in different ways. Botox temporarily paralyzes your facial muscles. When your facial muscles relax, your skin eventually follows suit which reduces the appearance of wrinkles. The results develop within a few days or a week of your injections.

Fillers, on the other hand, replace volume loss and literally fill in wrinkles and areas of lax skin with gels that are designed to replicate chemicals like hyaluronic acid that occur naturally in your body. Dermal fillers’ results are immediately noticeable and can last for up to 18 months.

BEFORE AND AFTER

What should I expect during treatment?

Whether you have Botox or dermal filler injections, your treatment begins with your doctor closely examining your face to identify the best places to make the injections. They’ll clean your face and mark the injection sites.

Then, using a small needle, your doctor will make the injections. A Botox treatment will take between 15-20 minutes. Dermal filler injections take a little bit longer because your doctor will stop to check his progress frequently and gently massage the gel into place.

After your Botox or dermal filler injections, your skin may be a little pink, but that typically subsides within a few hours. You should avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. It’s also important to avoid the sun on your injection days, and of course, you should wear sunscreen every day.
